Energy Saving Trust research using the Water Energy Calculator to report on Great Britain’s home water consumption. Between June 2010 and December 2012 more than 100,000 households used the Water Energy Calculator. 86,171 of those homes formed the total sample size of responses of Phase 1 of the research analysis. For the total water and energy consumption calculations only 38,839 fully-explicit self-reported responses to closed questions were used. Phase 2 of the research took place in 2013 and consisted of the researchers spending time with the household families in their homes to record perceptions on water use practices. Analysis outcomes include: the average household uses 349 litres of water daily; 43% of the respondents have a water meter in their home and these properties consumed around 3% less water than un-metered homes; showers are the biggest water-users; 87% of people did not exceed 10 minutes per shower; and 41% of homes had a dual-flush toilet.
