Drawing on the Observatory’s approaches to inform research on public engagement with water

The work of the UKERC Public Engagement Observatory and underpinning approaches to mapping participation and ecologies of participation are increasingly being taken-up and applied across multiple different domains.

Amongst others, the Enabling Water Smart Communities team at the University of East Anglia, comprising of Dr Tom Hargreaves and Dr Kavindra Paranage, have drawn on the Observatory’s methods and approaches to explore public engagement with water in the UK. Their work included a focused analysis of six in-depth cases-studies reflective of diverse forms of public engagement with water, and included: a) the behaviour change initiative Project Zero; b) citizen scientists in the Catchment Systems Thinking Cooperative (CastCo), c) examples of community engagement with groundwater flooding in Project Groundwater; d) forms of citizen-led campaigning and activism in the Cam Valley Forum, and e) new forms of community-led housing and co-governance in the Community Land Trust Network.

Key findings from this work will be showcased at a webinar this Wednesday, 11th June 2025, 13:00-14:00 (BST).
