Academic research carried out by the University of Northumberland in 2017 on the experiences of 11 social housing tenant households, where External Wall Insulation (EWI) was fitted. Data was collected from pre- and post-installation interviews regarding tenant experiences and property performance. Through the research, important insights are afforded with regards to: a) tenants’ knowledge, attitudes, and expectations prior to and following installation; b) household thermal comfort and energy spending before installation; c) tenant experiences of having EWI installed; d) tenant perceptions regarding the effects of EWI on thermal comfort, energy spending, and housing attractiveness; and e) impacts of EWI on internal temperatures and heat loss. The research stressed the potential advantage in terms of knowledge generation in engaging tenants in the process of energy efficiency retrofits in UK social houses.
