The Bristol Smart Energy City Collaboration is an interdisciplinary group formed in April 2015 to address challenges and map out steps forward for turning Bristol into a ‘smart energy city’. The CSE coordinates the ongoing Collaboration project and involves 10 expert organisations from the public, private, and voluntary sectors, including Bristol City Council, and KPMG. The Collaboration identified 5 objectives associated with a city-wide smart energy system: (1) Curbing energy waste and peak demand; (2) Enhancing the value of renewable electricity generated in or near the city; (3) Use of smart energy data to tackle fuel poverty and associated social challenges; (4) Capturing the economic benefits of a smart city; and (5) Developing a ‘fine-grain’ understanding of the energy system to enhance planning and operational capabilities. In 2015 the Collaboration produced a report exploring a holistic approach in meeting the objectives via creating a framework of 5 dimensions: (1) Technical – Energy Systems; (2) Technical – IT; (3) Commercial; (4) Regulatory/policy; and (5) Social/cultural.
