In 2018, Citizens Advice commissioned research into the early consumer experiences of smart meters. The research involved 1837 individuals in total, and comprised of: (a) an online survey with participants recruited via a panel, (b) face to face surveys conducted in home by a member of the DJS Research field team using CAPI (Computer aided personal interview). The research found that 80% of people who had a smart meter installed were satisfied with the installation process. But the findings also suggest that not everyone has experienced the promised benefits of smart metering. Some of the immediate benefits of smart meters, as advertised by industry, are access to usage data and accurate billing.
