A researcher at the University of Edinburgh developed 2 case studies investigating conflicts between offshore windfarms and tourism. Case study 1 was developed around the Argyll Array offshore windfarm in Scotland; and case study 2 was developed around the Baltic 1 offshore windpark in Germany. Data was collected from administrative documents and consultation responses, and 11 in-depth interviews with stakeholders in Germany and Scotland in 2010 and 2011. 5 arguments of why offshore windfarms might impact tourism were developed from the research: (1) visual disruptions; (2) disruptions of local character and identities; (3) ‘construction’ of tourists; (4) disturbance of recreational activities; and (5) environmental impacts.
