In May 2019, a new special interest XR group called ‘Doctors for Extinction Rebellion’ formed in the UK to fight climate change and promote planetary and public health. The group welcomes members from all healthcare backgrounds to join them in demanding urgent action on the causes of the ecological and climate emergency, and are actively taking part in non-violent direct action, such as demonstrations that occasionally result in arrests. Whilst similar in their approach to the main Extinction Rebellion group, their message is more clearly focused on the health impacts the climate emergency. This is in light of a deep sense that healthcare professionals must become advocates for the ecosystem as a vital part of health, and that to do this most effectively they must step out of their traditional roles as the General Medical Council’s interpretation of a doctor’s duty of care currently fails to acknowledge the threat to public health from climate change.
