Don’t Pay UK is a grassroots movement established in 2022 in the midst of an unprecedented energy crisis, demanding a fair price for energy for everyone. They strive to: (a) prevent a price hike on energy bills, (b) end all enforcement of higher-tariff pre-payment meters that disadvantage the poorest in society, (c) push for the establishment of an emergency social energy tariff to prevent people dying from cold this winter, and (d) push for the introduction of a emergency price banding whereby ordinary working class people and community groups will pay less per unit for their energy than the richer individuals in society. The movement primarily adopts mass non-payment strikes, aiming to persuade at least a million people to not pay their energy bills unless the bills are reduced by 1st October 2022. According to Don’t Pay UK, even if a fraction of those paying by direct debit stop their payments, it will be enough to put energy companies in serious trouble and force them to negotiate with Don’t Pay UK.
