Researchers from Cardiff and Leeds Universities conducted an experimental online survey in August 2014 with 1457 participants. Participants were drawn from an online market / social research panel and were selected to sample 3 areas (Lancashire, South Wales, and mid/ North Wales) where shale gas fracking had already commenced. Variations in the information given to participants about shale gas fracking in the survey to test how different framings affected their perceptions. The study found that participants were ambivalent about fracking, but were more aware of the risks than the benefits. Demographic characteristics, politics and environmental values exert strongest influence on perceptions.
