South Lakes Action on Climate Change – Towards Transition is a merging of two groups, South Lakes Action on Climate Change and Transition South Lakes. The two groups merged in 2009 in order to more effectively work at building a resilient and fossil fuel free future for South Lakeland. The core aims of the group are as follows:

  1. To increase awareness of local and global issues surrounding Climate Change and Peak Oil.
  2. To reduce South Lakeland’s overall Green House Gas emissions and dependence on Fossil Fuels.
  3. To establish and support South Lakeland as a Transition District.
  4. To take every reasonable step to minimise the Green House Gas emissions resulting from the groups’ activities.

The groups achieve these aims by a mixture of community projects, awareness raising, campaigning and regular events. Recent notable activities include registering a formal statement of opposition and protesting a proposed Cumbria coal mine, an e-cargo bike trial, running the Kendal Community Food Larder and Kendal People’s Cafe, running an anti-fracking campaign, campaigning for divestment, and organising and Energy Saving Fair.
