An academic study that used interviews, focus groups, an online survey, and ethnographic research to explore the roles of local communities in Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects using the proposed tidal Lagoon in Swansea Bay as a case study. Funded by Tidal Lagoon Power (Ltd) and led by researchers at the University of Leeds, the research was conducted from 2013-15. The study concluded that alternative models of ownership for large-infrastructure can improve the democratic role of different stakeholder groups because, as well as discussions of what gets built, when and where, attempts to engage local communities with infrastructure developments should also include discussion of who profits from the development and how.
