A researcher from the Association for the Conservation of Energy carried out a study into the role of experience-based know-how in monitoring and managing heat flows in the home. The research used quotes from sources such as web forums and advice sites and deduced that know-how appeared to be developed through experiences. The research also showed that accumulation of know-how was not a simple and linear process. Know-how was rather developed and altered in response to changing relationships between people and their material and social environments.
