Researchers from the University of Cardiff and Japan conducted a study drawing on several nationally representative surveys conducted in the UK and Japan between 2005 and 2011 to explore how the Fukushima accident in 2011 affected public perceptions of nuclear power. The study found that even before the accident the Japanese public were less supportive of nuclear power than the British. Japanese public trust in nuclear safety and regulation was significantly reduced following the accident, whereas British public attitudes did not change signficantly following the accident, with around a third of respondents reporting favourable attitudes towards nuclear power.
